ATTORNEY-GENERAL Idrus Harun has been given a six-month contract extension, Chief Secretary to the Government Mohd Zuki Ali said today.
Idrus’s new contract come into effective from Monday, Zuki said, adding that the king had consented to the extension.
The attorney-general was appointed on March 6, 2020, following the resignation of Tommy Thomas.
However, former Federal Court judge Idrus, 67, reached statutory retirement age last year and has been on short-term contracts since.
Previously, it had been reported that the unity government had said it was to replace Idrus at the end of last month.
Possible replacements for Idrus include justices Ahmad Fairuz Zainol Abidin, Kamaludin Md Said and Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh.
Fairuz and Kamaludin had previously served in the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) before being appointed to the bench.
There have also been calls for the replacement to come from within the AGC, with the current solicitor-general Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh in the frame. – March 3, 2023.
