THE Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) is looking at ways to reduce student’s burden at public universities by introducing flexible courses and shortening the study period for certain programmes, its minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin said.

He said allowing flexible study arrangements would allow students to complete their four-year programmes at home for two years before finishing the remainder of their course on campus.

“This helps to reduce the cost of living for the students as they will be staying at home, compared with when they have to stay at hostels on campus.

“The ministry is also considering shortening the duration of certain courses from four years to three years. We are still studying the matter,” he told reporters in Johor today after attending an event.

He said the flexibility could result in lower tuition as there would be lower usage of university facilities.

On Budget 2023, Khaled said the RM15.3 billion allocated to the MOHE is higher than last year’s budget of RM14.5 billion. – February 25, 2023.
