THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had submitted a report on its probe into Mohd Nazlan Ghazali to Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat on February 21, Law and Institutional Reform Minister Azalina Othman Said told parliament.
Azalina said MACC had completed their investigation on the Court of Appeal judge and had notified her that the report had been submitted to the chief justice.
The report was regarding Nazlan’s alleged breach of the Judge’s Code of Ethics 2009.
“However, there is no additional information that was given to me regarding this matter in the letter,” she told lawmakers while replying to points raised during the debate on the royal address today.
She told members the matter was subject to the decision of the chief justice in line with Article 125(3)(3A) of the Federal Constitution.
She, however, noted that the attorney general (AG) had the authority and discretion to begin proceedings against anyone, including judges.
“However, the government will not interfere with the powers of the AG,” she said.
On another matter, Azalina told the chamber that the government was going ahead with plans to set up a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to investigate issues raised in former attorney general Tommy Thomas’s memoir.
She said a memorandum would be tabled in the upcoming cabinet meeting on March 3.
Last month, the cabinet agreed to the formation of an RCI that would provide a holistic view on the revelations made by Thomas. – February 23, 2023.
