THE Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested a man who accused the agency of offering to pay Bersatu ex-information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan RM10 million to implicate party president Muhyiddin Yassin in a graft case.

MACC chief Azam Baki said the man, Mohamad Shafiq Abdul Halim, was arrested when he went in for questioning at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya yesterday.

Azam said Shafiq was arrested under the MACC Act 2009 for interfering with the investigation.

“He came to the office after receiving our instructions and was arrested at 3.30pm yesterday,” he said at a press conference at the MACC headquarters.

Shafiq claimed on social media the MACC had offered RM10 million to then Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful to implicate his president Muhyiddin in an ongoing corruption probe.

Shafiq later apologised for the claim, saying it was based on rumours he had heard during court proceedings on Wan Saiful’s corruption charges.

Wan Saiful claimed trial to accepting a bribe of RM6.9 million in relation to the Jana Wibawa initiative. He was also charged with soliciting an unspecified amount for a road project worth RM232 million linked to the programme.

He then submitted his resignation as Bersatu information chief.

Shafiq, who was reported to be Wan Saiful’s research officer, made the accusation in a 44-second clip on TikTok. – February 23, 2023.
