THE Transport Ministry is working on allowing motorists to renew their driving licence up to 10 years, minister Anthony Loke said.

He said he had instructed his officers to come up with a paper on the matter.

However, he stressed that for now, motorists can renew their driving licence up to five years.

“If they were to renew it for 10 years at one go, we could provide a deduction on the fees, to encourage the people to do so for a longer period.

“This could be implemented in the future,” he told the Dewan Rakyat when winding up on points raised during the debate on the royal address today.

On a suggestion that the driving licence fee be paid only once by motorists, Loke said the ministry had to study it carefully.

“When the driving licence fee is collected every year, it contributes to the government’s revenue through the Road Transport Department,” he said.

Similarly, he said, the ministry had no plans to reduce the road tax, noting that it contributed to the government’s coffers.

He said the ministry collected some RM3 billion from this tax annually.

“Since we are facing a drop in revenue, any decision to reduce the road tax will have a negative impact on the government’s income,” he added. – February 22, 2023.
