THE Examination Board today denied using a social media influencer as the voice for the 2022 SPM English listening test.
In a statement today, the board said speakers used consist of teachers, lecturers, and school and university students who are proficient in English.
“Those involved have also been trained ahead of the development process for the test.
“The board is confident that the quality of the audio material and 2022 SPM listening paper remains intact.
“We will ensure fairness and that the interests of candidates taking the SPM examination in 2022 are safeguarded,” it said.
The controversy arose when teachers and students began to complain about the quality of diction for the SPM English listening test held on Thursday, with students saying the voice was slurred and spoke too fast.
A teacher asked if the board had opted to use TikTok influencers over its usual stable of voices.
“The test requires candidates to listen, analyse the context of the situation and understand the overall meaning of the audio material,” the board said.
“The board also ensures that items or instruments constructed reach the level of administrability, validity, reliability, and authority.
“The matter is given attention to ensure that the item or instrument is fair to all candidates,” it said.
In addition, it said the speaker’s speech speed rate is based on the common European framework of reference for languages (CEFR) competency level.
The board said test is based on the typical speaking rate and standard speech and conversation, as well as the authentic aspect of the speaker to create a real context, adding that it trials its material before applying it nationwide. – Bernama, February 19, 2023.
