PAS today defended the action of its youth wing members after an event in Terengganu showed them carrying fake swords and shields.
Party deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the matter should not be blown out of proportion to the extent of depicting the party members as militants.
“It is similar to a Chinese opera where the actors also carry swords and spears,” said Tuan Ibrahim after the Himpunan Pemuda Islam Terengganu in Setiu on Friday.
“There is no issue here. It is better for us to focus our time and energy on more meaningful things such as tackling the rising cost of living and education and social problems,” he said in a statement.
Tuan Ibrahim said detractors should not try to portray the party in a negative way based on “one or two pictures” that circulated on social media.
“Maybe this is just their way of trying to deflect from the real issues at hand,” he said without elaborating.
Earlier today, Terengganu police said it will summon the organiser of an event involving a group of participants who marched with fake swords, spears and shields while clad in mediaeval Islamic war attire in Setiu.
Setiu police chief Afandi Hussin confirmed his men have contacted Terengganu PAS Youth to help facilitate investigations into the matter.
Pictures and clips of the event went viral today, showing a group of people dressed in white robes and green turbans, with some in black uniforms.
The group was filmed marching down a street decorated with PAS party flags in the background.
A four-wheel drive vehicle was also spotted, carrying a large replica of a sword.
It is understood that the parade was part of the state’s PAS Youth gathering. – February 19, 2023.

Tuan Ibrahim should know the difference. A Chinese Opera is a stage show and a yearly cultural event. It is not a street march.
PAS youth's was a street march / convoy like the military might shows put up by certain countries displaying their missiles, tanks, etc. as a warning to other countries to "DON'T MESS WITH US or WE'LL USE THESE TO TEACH YOU A LESSON".
Being a religion based party, what was it subtly telling people of other religions?
The Religions Affairs Minister is correct that if any "drama" was put up, it should be one that creates unity of the people and not bring disrepute to the religion.
