THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has recorded Muhyiddin Yassin’s statement in investigations into RM300 million received by Bersatu from Covid-19 economic stimulus package funds.

Sources said Muhyiddin, who is Bersatu president, had his statement recorded yesterday at the anti-graft commission’s office in Putrajaya.

It is learnt that MACC had also summoned other top party leaders previously.

“The investigation papers have already been completed and the Attorney-General’s Chambers will decide on whether to bring charges against some individuals,” a source said.

Both bank accounts belonging to the party are still frozen until further action, the source added.

The source also said the MACC investigations found that there were contractors who paid bribes to certain parties in Bersatu for the purpose of obtaining projects.

“Of the funds obtained by the party, some were allegedly not used in the 15th general election campaign,” he said.

Two weeks ago, MACC had frozen Bersatu’s accounts just 24 hours after the party declared its 2020 and 2021 transactions.

MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed this and said two accounts belonging to the party have been frozen to facilitate investigations under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

Azam however declined to reveal further details.

On January 6, MACC remanded a chief executive officer of a company who acted as a middleman in the distribution of government projects under the economic stimulus package from 2020 to 2022.

MACC had previously issued a statement regarding the investigation, which focused on the RM92.5 billion in government funds under the economic stimulus and recovery programme under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government.

Source told The Malaysian Insight that MACC has opened several investigation papers on at least five people believed to be masterminds or middlemen for several companies to obtain projects worth between RM50 million and RM500 million through direct negotiation.

On December 15, MACC raided eight government agencies and nine companies as part of its investigation into the alleged misappropriation of RM92.5 billion by the PN-led government. – February 17, 2023.
