THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will call in Bersatu’s donors in the next stage of its investigation into the party’s source of political funding, The Star Online reported.
The daily said these donors will be asked to explain their contributions to the party, and if they were promised any government projects in return for their contributions.
“Aside from Bersatu officials, investigators also called up political contributors.
“Investigators wanted to find out if their contributions were (linked to) projects or contracts awarded to them or if they were given assurances of future projects,” a source was quoted as saying.
It is unclear as to how many of Bersatu’s political contributors were called in for their statements to be recorded.
The MACC recently confirmed freezing Bersatu’s bank accounts as part of an investigation under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
It is investigating if the party received money from contractors who benefited from government contracts under the Muhyiddin Yassin administration. Muhyiddin is Bersatu president. – February 13, 2023.
