THE government will not heed calls for reform of Malay monopoly in the civil service, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said today.

He said the government does not consider the dominance of the Malays in the public service sector to be a problem at the moment.

“We don’t have to consider this at the moment because I don’t think it is a problem now,” Anwar told reporters after launching the Housewives Social Security Scheme and MYFutureJobs Career Carnival 2023 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (KLCC) today.

Yesterday, Penang Deputy Chief Minister II P. Ramasamy called on the unity government to end the racial monopoly in the public service sector, so that it is no longer dominated by one race.

Ramasamy, who is Penang DAP’s deputy chairman, said the debate that the participation of many Malays in the public sector, to balance the dominance of the Chinese in the economy as stated by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, no longer applies.

He also said that such racist policies could no longer be defended, especially with the unity government now in power.

According to Anwar, the proposal by Ramasamy is the latter’s personal view and does not represent the position of DAP or the government.

“We should not prohibit people from speaking, giving opinions. They can (give opinions), but it does not influence DAP or the government’s decision,” he said.

In a response to Ramasamy, Hulu Langat MP Mohd Sany Hamzan had called on DAP to sack the former for making such comments.

“DAP I believe needs to do something because this is not the first (such) statement from him that has troubled DAP.

“The most appropriate action for me is to fire him as the deputy chief minister of Penang because I believe there are many other leaders who are more competent to be appointed to the post,” he said in a statement today.

He claimed that Ramasamy’s statements had caused problems for Pakatan Harapan.

The Amanah central committee member said that Ramasamy was trying to become a hero of his people through cheap publicity. –  February 11, 2023.

  • I am a non Malay and I agree that this is no longer an issue with most non Malays. The important thing is the the civil service should be fair, competent and act with integrity and in accordance with the laws of the country. We should no longer talk about race anymore in anyway. Many things have already happened in the past that cannot be changed according to our whims and fancies without major negative disruptions. So let us focus on issues that we can handle to make the country competitive and clean again and improve the livelihood of the Rakyat, esp those in the B40 first, irrespective of race.
