PRIME Minister Anwar Ibrahim today reiterated that his daughter Nurul Izzah will never abuse her position for self-gain.

In defending his appointment of Nurul as a senior adviser on economics and finance, the PKR president said that her expertise and experience were needed.

“Firstly, there is no remuneration and secondly, there is no possibility of using that position to amass wealth, to influence decisions, tenders, contracts, or projects.

“Yes, I need her expertise to assist me but notwithstanding, let me emphasise that she is there to protect and pursue the agenda of (good) governance and incorruptibility in the system,” Anwar said in a press conference at party headquarters today.

Anwar then said he took a strong position against certain people who criticised the appointment of Nurul Izzah, asserting that many had abused their positions to amass wealth while in power.

“I take a strong position against those who have criticised, particularly those who awarded billions or hundreds of millions worth of contracts to their sons, sons-in-law, or cronies when they were in power.

“Now they want to talk about good governance,” he said, without mentioning the names of the individuals he was referring to.

Last week, Nurul Izzah confirmed her appointment as senior economic and financial adviser to the prime minister, adding that she began her service on January 3.

The announcement received much criticism, with some describing it as nepotism.

Anwar had previously defended the appointment of his daughter, claiming it was made based on her qualifications. – February 6, 2023.
