THE anti-corruption agency has yet to question PAS leaders over allegations of vote-buying.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man told The Malaysian Insight this after the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) opened a probe into 90 people who allegedly received cash to vote for the Islamist party in Terengganu in the general election.

“So far none of the PAS leaders have been called up by MACC,” Tuan Ibrahim said briefly

A video allegedly showing people being paid to vote was recently circulated on social media..

The MACC was said to have identified the people who received the money after the agency seized documents they had signed acknowleging receipt of the payment.

The recipients were also required to take an oath in exchange for the money.

The MACC is expected to complete the investigation into the case in about two weeks.

Barisan Nasional candidates filed a petition last month to nullify the the 2022 election results in three seats in Terengganu because of the alleged bribery.

The three candidates, who lost the elections, are Jasmira Othman (Marang), Mohd Zubir Embong (Kuala Terengganu) and Ahmad Said (Kemaman).

Ahmad, who is the Terengganu Umno chairman, said witnesses had affirmed that they received money to vote for PAS.

Perikatan Nasional is seeking to dismiss the petition.

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has denied bribing voters, saying the money paid out was done in charity.

Yesterday PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said the Islamist party was ready to cooperate with MACC in the probe.

PAS, a member of Perikatan Nasional, won nearly all the parliamentary seats in Terengganu, Kelantan and Perlis in the November elections.

MACC recently froze the accounts of PAS’ coalition partner Bersatu, under the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act.

The action was taken after Bersatu reported an annual income of more than RM147 million.

The matter of PN’s vast funds was raised by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during the election campaign. He had accused the PN government of stealing billions of ringgit that were meant for the economic stimulus packages in 2021.

PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin denied the claims. – February 4, 2023.
