UMNO secretary-general Ahmad Maslan should not claim on behalf of the Registrar of Societies that the party did not violate its constitution at its recent general assembly, said Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
The Umno vice-president said Ahmad should understand that the ROS was still investigating the complaint on the legality of the general assembly’s decision to not allow the party’s top two positions to be contested.
“Don’t speak for the ROS, which has only said that it has received two complaints (about the decision).
“I have been made to understand that complaints have been received and are being investigated by the ROS. So how is Ahmad Maslan saying (that the decision was legal and valid),” Ismail was quoted as saying by Malay-language daily Berita Harian online.
Yesterday, Ahmad said on Facebook that the party did not breach the rules when the Umno general assembly delegates passed a no-contest motion for the president and deputy president posts.
“Everything went smoothly. About 90% of the delegates agreed that the president and deputy president posts would not be contested. There have been many times in Umno’s 77-year history that the positions have not been contested,” he said.
On January 31, the Umno leadership met with ROS to clarify the situation.
The meeting was held after two Umno member complained that the move to allow party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and his deputy Mohamad Hasan to keep their posts unchallenged was unconstitutional. – February 4, 2023.
