THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) probe into Bersatu’s bank accounts is to determine the source of its funds, chief commissioner Azam Baki said.

He said Bersatu has nothing to worry if the funds are from legitimate sources.

“We are probing alleged abuse of power and money laundering. It is our duty to do so. Among others, our focus is to determine whether the funds were obtained legitimately,” he was quoted as saying in New Straits Times today.

“If the investigation reveals no wrongdoing, then we will advise the attorney-general accordingly.

“But if there is evidence showing otherwise, then that would be different.”

Azam said the investigation is being handled professionally and with integrity.

Earlier this week, MACC confirmed that it had frozen several of Bersatu’s bank accounts.

The probe is believed to be related to the alleged misuse of RM600 billion in government funds during the Covid-19 pandemic under the Perikatan Nasional administration.

Several Bersatu officials are believed to have been called in for questioning.

Bersatu has denied any wrongdoing and yesterday, its president, Muhyiddin Yassin, said the party would be writing to MACC to have its accounts unfrozen.

He said the party needed money to pay its staff and maintenance.

Other leaders had previously accused the government of targeting Bersatu to derail its preparation for elections in six states that must be held this year.

Azam also said MACC is duty-bound to investigate any quarter, even parties in the government, if any allegations arose and reports were received.

“We conduct investigations based on reports lodged. If there are instances of abuse of power, there will surely be those who want to report them,” he said.

“However, there has been no such allegation levelled against the current government.” – February 3, 2023.
