BERSATU is hoping for a swift conclusion to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) investigation into alleged misappropriation of Covid-19 funds, so the party can carry on without any restrictions, deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu said.

According to Faizal, the party had been affected by the MACC freezing its accounts.

“We hope they can conduct their investigations quickly because we will have issues with the party’s operations, including paying workers’ salaries, with our accounts frozen,” he was quoted as saying in Malay-language daily Sinar Harian.

He also said that Bersatu was a small party and was not well-funded.

“If we have no money at all, it won’t be easy to campaign for the elections.

“However, if we have to set off on foot to meet voters one by one, we will go ahead and do that,” he said.

Yesterday, MACC chief Azam Baki confirmed that Bersatu’s accounts had been frozen under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (Amla).

Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin accused the government of using the anti-graft agency as a political tool.

Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin previously denied claims his government had misappropriated RM92.5 billion when he was prime minister. – February 2, 2023.
