THE Women, Family and Community Development Ministry is encouraging housewives in the country to register as contributors under the Housewives Social Security Scheme which was opened on December 1 last year.

Its minister Nancy Shukri said the scheme was beneficial to housewives as a form of protection in the event of an accident or any incident that might affect their ability to run their households.

Citing an example, she said a housewife (Nur Atirah Jafar), who was a contributor to the scheme, was killed in an accident on December 26 last year, and her family was entitled to receive a survivors’ pension.

“Her case was identified by Socso after it went viral on social media,” she told reporters after handing over RM2,000 as funeral compensation to Nur Atirah’s family in Kampung Bintawa Hilir, Kuching, today.

“The deceased’s one-year-old child will also receive a monthly pension until the age of 21,” she said.

Based on Socso data, more than 40,000 housewives are contributing to the scheme in Sarawak. – Bernama, January 31, 2023.
