SEMBRONG lawmaker Hishammuddin Hussein is questioning his suspension from Umno after receiving a letter from the party today.

He said in a Facebook post that the party did not state the reason for his six-year suspension from the party.

“Just received the official letter dated yesterday regarding the suspension of my Umno membership. No reason was specified for the suspension,” he said.

A letter issued by Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan stated that the Umno Supreme Council, on January 27, decided that Hishammuddin would be suspended from the party for breaching Clause 20.9 of the Umno constitution.

Ahmad said that the suspension is for six years, starting from January 27, 2023, or two election cycles for the Umno Supreme Council.

Clause 20.9 of the party’s constitution states that all Umno members must abide by its constitution and members’ code of ethics.

This includes complying with party orders, preserving Umno’s good name, and respecting party decisions, among others.

Yesterday, former Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin said that he had never intended to leave Umno, but was sacked without due process.

“I was not invited for a disciplinary hearing; I was not even told that my case would be discussed in the Supreme Council meeting.

“The sacking is not fair at all,” he added.

When asked if he would accept a suspension instead, he said that would not make things any better.

“If the party doesn’t want you, then it’s better to be sacked,” he said.

Last Friday, Umno sacked Khairy and Noh Omar, both veteran leaders, for allegedly working against the interests of the party.

Deputy Umno Youth chief Shahril Hamdan also received a six-year suspension.

Also suspended were former Jempol MP Mohd Salim Shariff and former Tiram assemblyman Maulizan Bujang. – January 31, 2023.
