Khairy mulls Selangor polls foray with right party

KHAIRY Jamaluddin is looking at Selangor to further his political career and could contest in the state polls after losing Sungai Buloh in the general election.

But the sacked Umno leader must first find a new party.

“There is a possibility if I find the right fit with the right party,” Khairy told The Malaysian Insight.

He has not been short of offers since he was sacked from Umno last week.

“I think my politics has migrated to Selangor,” the former Rembau MP added.

The former Umno youth chief, along with another party stalwart, Noh Omar, were booted from Umno on Friday for allegedly working against party interests.

Sembrong MP Hishammuddin Hussein and deputy Umno Youth chief Shahril Hamdan were suspended for six years.

Also suspended were former Jempol MP Mohd Salim Shariff and former Tiram assemblyman Maulizan Bujang.

Options

Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Penang, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu are expected to call elections by September.

Khairy said he would have to carefully consider his options before accepting any offers.

He said that he and the party must have “chemistry”.

“If I feel the fit is there, I’m comfortable with them, and they are comfortable with me, more importantly, then it could happen.

“If I don’t find the right chemistry for now I’m not in any rush to jump in,” Khairy added.

Khairy said he has received offers from various parties on both sides of the divide. He did not want to name the parties.

“There have been a lot of invitations for me to go and see people. When I see people, I have a sense of where the direction of that party is, whether there is a comfort level there for me to enter,” he said.

“One difficulty I have is that I’ve only known one political party. I’m not a serial jumper. I’ve been with Umno for 23 years, since I joined politics.

“If you’ve been with one organisation or one person for so long, it’s only natural  to take time to find the right  fit,” Khairy added.

On Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim’s offer as JDT FC chief executive officer and Johor Youth adviser, Khairy said that he will be having a discussion on this soon.

Khairy said that he also has “other offers” to consider.

“I’m very honoured that the crown prince of Johor has reached out to me and asked me to consider his offer.

“I will certainly be meeting with him to discuss further and see how I could play a role in his organisation, whether it is in football or in the Johor youth movement, something I feel strongly about.

“At the same time, I also have other offers and I want to see how I can contribute to as many of these offers as possible,” he added. – January 31, 2023.
