Nearly 14,000 flee floods in 3 states

ALMOST 14,000 people affected by floods in Johor, Sabah and Pahang are currently housed in 73 relief centres this morning.

IN JOHOR, the number of flood evacuees increased slightly to 3,480 as of 8 o’clock this morning from 3,328 last night, and are accommodated at 35 relief centres in several districts.

Mersing recorded the highest number of evacuees at 1,792, followed by Kluang (780), Kota Tinggi (417), Batu Pahat (209), Segamat (115) and Tangkak (15).

Meanwhile, four rivers in the state have risen above the danger level, namely Sungai Lenik in Ladang Chaah, Segamat with a reading of 5.96m; Sungai Kahang in Kampung Contoh, Kluang (14.53m); Sungai Muar in Bukit Kepong, Muar (3.33m) and Sungai Endau, Mersing (2.9m).

IN SABAH, the number of flood evacuees rose slightly to 10,347 from 3,569 families as of 8am, and are housed at 34 relief centres in six districts, from 10,312 (3,564 families) last night.

Another relief centre was opened in Lahad Datu at 9pm yesterday to accommodate 23 people from five families.

A total of 2,160 people (795 families) are placed in nine centres in Pitas while 664 people (187 families) are taking shelter at nine centres in Paitan.

In Tawau, 109 people (24 families) are housed at a centre and in Telupid, 21 people (five families) are placed at two centres.

IN PAHANG, the number of flood victims in Rompin this morning remained unchanged at 353 from 106 families with four relief centres still operating – Kampung Setajam (165), Kampung Rekoh (122), Balai Raya Bukit Lepas (40) and Balai Raya Kampung Denai (26).

Sungai Keratong in Rompin recorded a reading of 24.36m this morning, compared with 24.45m last night, still above the danger level of 23m. – Bernama, January 28, 2023.
