Flash flood warning issued in 6 states


Perak, Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan, Sabah and Sarawak have been warned of potential flash floods due to inclement weather. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, January 27, 2023.

THE National Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre under the Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) has issued a flash flood warning for six states from tonight. 

IN PERAK, the areas at risk of being affected are Kerian (Gunong Semanggol and Beriah subdistricts and surrounding areas) while in Pahang, it involves Kuantan (Sungai Karang and surrounding areas). 

IN TERENGGANU, the districts at risk of flash floods are Kuala Terengganu (Cenering, Batu Buruk, Kuala Terengganu, and surrounding areas) and Marang (Bukit Payung and surrounding areas), while in Kelantan it involves Kota Baru (Padang Raja, Tiong, Tok Ku, and surrounding areas). 

IN SARAWAK, it involves three districts – Kuching, Samarahan and Miri – while in Sabah, it involves Tuaran’s Pekan Tenghilan and Kampung Berungis subdistricts and their surrounding areas. 

The notice issued at 5pm, based on the Meteorological Department’s rain forecast, the Southeastern Asia-Oceania Flash Flood Guidance System, and the DID flood forecast model, states there is a risk of flash floods in these states in the event of heavy rain or significant thunderstorms. – Bernama, January 27, 2023.
