THE Registrar of Societies (ROS) will meet Umno representatives over complaints received about the party’s recent decision not to hold contests for president and deputy president’s posts.

ROS director-general Mohd Nawardi Saad was reported as saying by the New Straits Times that the meeting will take place next week, although he had not received the full report on the 2022 Umno General Assembly.

During the assembly, a motion not to contest the top two party posts was approved.

Umno elections must be held before May 19.

Unhappy party members lodged reports with the ROS over the motion, which they said undermined democratic processes in the party.

“As of today, ROS has yet to receive a full report (on the general assembly), but next week ROS will hold a meeting with Umno,” Nawardi was quoted as saying.

He did not reveal the time and date of the meeting.

Nawardi said ROS is investigating a complaint lodged by Kuala Nerus Umno member Muhammad Aizat Fikri Nasir and Negri Sembilan Umno member Muhammad Fiqri Firdaus Rom over the resolution.

They claimed the resolution is illegal and runs contrary to Umno’s constitution, as well as division and branch conference rules.

“ROS will take note of the matter (complaint), we are investigating,” he said.

On Saturday, Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said the party will meet with ROS to explain the general assembly process and voting procedure.

The no-contest resolution allows Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Mohamad Hassan to retain the top two party posts for another term.

The party is also looking to take action against those who criticised the resolution, including Khairy Jamaluddin, who was touted as the next party president. – January 27, 2023.
