LAWMAKERS from both sides of the divide are welcome to ask questions on the economy and inflation in the upcoming parliamentary session, Rafizi Ramli said.

The economy minister said he is prepared to answer the questions directed at him.

“I don’t find inflation to be a political issue, so, whether government or opposition (MPs) want to raise it, that is their right,” Rafizi said at a press conference in Putrajaya today.

The sitting, which will commence February 13, will be Rafizi’s first appearance as economy minister.

Although it is unusual for an economy minister to speak on inflation and prices of goods, Rafizi said these are pressing matters for the people.

“For the people, the two most important economic issues are the prices of goods as and wages.

“This is why I tell the people in my ministry that although this job is not ‘sexy’, these (matters) have the biggest impact on the people.

“I believe the people are clever and they can evaluate the issue. Whether the opposition wants to raise the matter, it is up to them, as the people know the real situation.

Earlier today, Rafizi said the 2022 national inflation rate eased to 3.3% in line with the Finance Ministry’s predictions.

Rafizi said inflation, which is measured by the consumer price index, hit a six-month low of 3.8% in December, down from 4% in November. – January 25, 2023.
