THE Health Ministry has expressed concern over the sale of toy-like e-cigarettes and vaping products in front of a school, following a video that was posted on social recently.

In a statement, Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the ministry has also received information on widespread advertising and sales of the vape products.

“This is very worrisome for both parents and teachers alike as the products in question have been created and designed in such a way that it attracts the attention of children.

“What is even more worrying is the fact that this particular e-cigarette or vape product uses nicotine-based liquid, but the sale of such products is controlled,” she said.

She added that companies must obtain approval from the authorities for the distribution and supply of any item containing nicotine.

Zaliha said the government was drafting legislation to tighten restrictions on the sale of nicotine, but the second reading of the Tobacco and Smoking Product Control Bill had been delayed.

She said the sale of the product known as “Tiger Pod” required approval from Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, local governments and other enforcement agencies.

“I would also like to stress that vape entrepreneurs must be responsible and take responsibility when producing and selling their products.

“Parents must also help to observe and monitor their children’s behaviour to make sure that they do not end up picking up the bad habit as it can be detrimental to their health,” she said.

Zaliha also said the ministry would work together with the Education and Higher Education Ministries, as well as civil society groups for advocacy and preventive activities.

“This to ensure continuous education on the dangers of vaping and smoking, which can be widely spread to all layers and levels of society and the community,” she said. – January 25, 2023.
