UP to RM1.02 billion is expected to be invested in 25 movie and TV projects this year in Malaysia.
National Film Development Corporation (Finas) CEO Prof Dr Md Nasir Ibrahim said 18 of the projects are international films and reality shows.
Nasir said in two productions with an investment of RM416 million are currently underway. They are an international reality show and a feature film.
“The reality show will be shot in the northern region of the country while the film will be undertaken by a two-time Oscar winning director. The movie will be shot around the Klang Valley, Penang, Sandakan and Johor Baru,” he said.
He said RM416 million of the investments will pay for cast and crew, hotel, studios, food and beverage, logistics, entertainment and tourism.
He said the money was from the Qualifying Malaysian Production Expenditure (QMPE).
“A cash rebate of 30% + 5% will be given to the producer based on the QMPE.
“The funds are provided by the government as an incentive for creative content development, specifically for film, television and other screen productions.”
Since 2013, Finas has gained RM2.4 billion worth of investments.
As for whether Oscar winning director Ang Lee is scouting for locations to film kungfu legend Bruce Lee’s biopic in Malaysia, Nasir said the information was confidential.
“We cannot disclose the name of the project, producer, director, cast at the moment because there is a non-disclosure agreement.
“The production team will decide when the information can be disclosed.”
Lee was spotted in Johor Baru in December. He was reported to be scouting for filming locations.
The film which is currently in development at Sony’s 3000 Pictures will feature Ang Lee’s 32-year-old son, actor Mason, in the lead. – January 24, 2023.
