Over 1,000 road crashes logged on Op Selamat 5th day

MORE than 1,000 road crashes were recorded across the country on the fifth day of Op Selamat 19, which began January 18.

Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department director Mat Kasim Karim said the 1,445 crashes involved 1,724 vehicles, with cars involved the highest number of cases at 1,310.

This was followed by four-wheel drives at 230 cases, motorbikes (144), lorries (17), buses (11), vans (nine), taxis (two) and ambulances (one).

He said police are stepping up efforts to lower the road crash rate and better prevent burglaries throughout the festive season.

“The initiatives implemented are crash prevention measures, emphasising road safety, and educating commuters to practise safe driving and comply with traffic laws,” he said in a statement tonight.

Op Selamat 19 is being carried out until January 27 across the country in conjunction with the Chinese New Year holiday. – Bernama, January 23, 2023.
