UMNO secretary-general Ahmad Maslan and the party’s lawyer will meet the Registrar of Societies (ROS) to clear the air over a no-contest motion for the party’s top two posts.

Ahmad said the party representatives will explain to the ROS that the motion was passed in accordance with the Umno constitution at the Umno general assembly last weekend.

This was after two Umno members filed a complaint with the ROS yesterday stating that the no-contest motion had breached article 10 of the party’s constitution.

“The permanent chairman (Badruddin Amiruldin) allowed the proposal for the motion in line withClause 21.1 of the assembly’s rules, which was within his power,” Ahmad told Berita Harian.

“If the delegates did not agree, they could have stood up to express their disagreement.

“More than 90% of the delegates expressed their agreement by raising their hands and even standing. There were only a few dozen delegates who raised their hands or stood up to express their disapproval.

“Therefore, this was a decision that was reached at the general assembly. It is an order or party policy that all Umno members must abide by,” he added.

The deputy finance minister did not want to comment on whether the two Umno members’ complaint to the ROS was in compliance with party rules.

Last week, the Johor and Federal Territories chapters of Umno rejected the motion that the party president and deputy president should not be challenged for their posts.
