The movie “Pulau”, whose trailer became controversial this week for allegedly being obscene, is a horror film and not a pornographic movie, the Film Censorship Board (LPF) said.

The board also found that the trailer uploaded on social media that garnered public attention was different from the film submitted for censorship.

“The movie ‘Pulau’ is a horror movie and not a porn movie as advertised.

“The LPF found that there is a difference between the trailer content shared on social media and the content submitted for censorship,” the LPF said in a statement.

It also said that the trailer, which constitutes the promotional material of the film to be shown in cinemas, is outside its jurisdiction.

“Pulau”, which will be shown on March 9, has been criticised by various parties who urged LPF to review the film’s approval based on the 2-minute 36-second trailer that was shown on the social media of Golden Screen Cinemas last week.

The film is produced by WebTVAsia in collaboration with My Way Pictures and Filmforce Studio.

The LPF also said that it appreciated the public’s views and feedback regarding film censorship, especially those that were constructive and based on “the entire content of a film”.

“The LPF is always sensitive to the morals and socio-culture of Malaysian society and implements film screenings as stipulated in the guidelines,” said the board.

Yesterday, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said that film censorship came under the jurisdiction of the LPF under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The “Pulau” trailer controversy arose when Home Affairs Minister Saifuddin Nasution approved a new film classification system that would come into effect on February 1.

The movie features a cast of many local personalities, including singer Alif Satar, actor Harris Annuar, beauty queen Sanjna Suri, model and actress Amelia Henderson, and social media influencer and DJ, Siew Pui Yi, popularly known as Ms Puiyi. – January 19, 2023.
