A season of don'ts

The Malaysian Insight

THIS is turning out to be the season of don’ts.

Do not attend buka puasa functions. Do not speculate on Pastor Raymond Koh’s abduction. Do not question the gush of investments from China.

Do not question why only civil servants seem to be caught in the anti-corruption dragnet and not politicians, given that many of our politicians would have failed the “living beyond your means” test.

‎Do not question why Malaysian authorities have closed the 1MDB probe without even a single prosecution while Singapore has smacked banks and individuals for breaching money laundering laws in relation to 1MDB transaction.

Expect the list of don’ts to grow much longer in the run-up to the general election. Expect more threats to be issued by Putrajaya and their sycophants ‎as the desire to shut down discussion grows.

Oh, and expect those issuing the don’ts to justify the decrees and directives on the grounds of maintaining racial harmony, political stability and the sanctity of religion.

But we know better.

In the face of these attempts to cower Malaysians into silence with the list of don’ts, we must ask ourselves a few questions:

* Is our silence more attractive than fidelity to the truth?

* Is gaining approval more desirable than persevering in doing good and seeking the truth?

* Is our safety and well-being more important than suffering for righteousness? – June 3, 2017.
