UMNO delegates will debate and vote today on a supplementary motion on no contest for the top two positions, its party information chief Isham Jalil said.

Isham said the motion was tabled by Negri Sembilan delegate Mohd Shukri Samsudin, and supported by representatives from Terengganu, Penang and Selangor, as well as from the Wanita wing.

Thirteen more delegates are expected to debate today on the motion.

“Usually, in matters like this, after all the speeches are delivered, the permanent chairman will put the motion up for vote,” he told reporters at the end of yesterday’s proceedings.

There are also six other motions to be discussed today.

Earlier yesterday Barisan Nasional  secretary-general Zambry Abdul Kadir said there was no motion tabled to propose a no-challenge condition against the president and his deputy.

However he did say that it would be left to the delegates to bring it up in their debates.

A video on TikTok showed Shukri proposing that the posts of president and deputy president positions are not challenged, drawing jeers from some in the hall.

Earlier party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had said he was “ready to fight” to defend his position despite calls from some in the party for the top two posts to be unchallenged. – January 14, 2023.
