Express bus driver killed, 8 injured in highway crash


AN express bus driver was killed, while eight others were injured, in a crash involving three vehicles at KM32.5 of the north-bound North-South Expressway yesterday.

Kulai police chief Tok Beng Yeow said the 9.30pm crash involved an express bus, a car and a lorry.

The bus driver, aged 65, died at the scene from multiple injuries, he said in a statement today.

He said the eight injured were the bus passengers, while the lorry driver and the car driver escaped injury.

“The lorry driver lost control of the wheel causing the vehicle to skid and crash into the road divider.

“A bus heading in the same direction could not stop in time, hit the lorry and then veered towards the left side of the road into a drain. A car was also involved in the accident,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kulai Fire and Rescue Station operations commander Fairuz Helmi Mohd Ali said 22 firefighters from his station and Skudai rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 10.17pm.

“The bus driver, identified as Ismail Tapah, 65, was confirmed dead (at the scene) by medical officers… the injured victims were taken to a nearby hospital and the deceased was handed over to the police for further action,” Fairuz said in a statement.

He said the rescue operation ended at 12.42am today. – Bernama, January 10, 2023.
