SUBANG MP R. Sivarasa has “crossed the line” by delivering a speech in a mosque, says Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah today.

The sultan said he had made it clear that politicians were prohibited from giving speeches or lectures in mosques to prevent disunity among Muslims.

“However, my advice was not heeded and i want to stress here that MP R. Sivarasa, you have crossed the line.

I will not stop you from giving an eight- or 10-hour speech outside of the mosque area as it is up the people to listen or not. But never in the mosque and its vicinity,” he said at the opening of the An Nur Temasya mosque in Glenmarie, Shah Alam today.

Sultan Sharafuddin also chided the mosque authorities for their lack of sensitivity and failure to take his decree seriously in allowing the mosque to be turned into a political arena.

“I want mosques to b a place for prayers, a place to learn more about Islam, and for strengthening the relations between Muslims so they are not divided or factioned.

“I have given authority to the nazir and the mosque committee to protect the sanctity of the mosque and house of Allah, therefore, use the power wisely,” said Sultan Sharafuddin, adding that they should resign if they wish to be active in politics.

He said he would not hesitate to instruct the Selangor Islamic Department (Jais) to replace those who had violated mosque regulations.

“I want Jais to investigate this case and take action against the committee after the month of Ramadan if there is any proof of wrongdoing,” he added.

Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president Muhyiddin Yassin found himself in a similar predicament when he was prevented from holding Ramadan programmes in a mosque, recently.

The former deputy prime minister, however, said he would find other venues to hold his functions during Ramadan. – June 2, 2017.
