THE Customs Department is ready to take on the task of implementing the Goods and Services Tax (GST), if the government intends to introduce GST said Customs director-general Zazuli Johan.
However, Zazuli said there has been no indication of when or if the tax will be re-introduced.
“The implementation of GST would depend on the government but we are always ready for any eventuality if the government says ok.
“The decision will depend on the government, including the percentage to be imposed,” he said in Tumpat today.
Speaking of smuggling during the floods, especially along the Malaysia-Thailand border, Zazuli admitted that such incidents do take place but the department had beefed up enforcement.
“Meanwhile, Kelantan Customs managed to collect RM205 million in tax for the year 2022, compared with RM91.9 million in 2021.
“It is a major achievement that we can be proud of since it will increase the country’s revenue,” he said. – Bernama, January 5, 2023.
