Education officials to meet parents of teens slapped by coach

THE Education Ministry will meet the parents of the two teenage girls who were slapped by their volleyball coach as seen in a viral video recently.

In a statement, the Education Ministry said it is taking the matter seriously adding that stern action will be taken against the coach if he is found guilty.

“The Education Ministry view seriously media reports (on this matter) and will hold a meeting with the parents of the students who were involved to obtain more information.

“The ministry will continue our investigation. If found guilty, appropriate action will be taken (against the coach),” it said.

The ministry also said that it will be cooperating with the police if a report is lodged while stressing that it is committed to ensuring the safety of students.

In a video clip which has been making the rounds on social media, a coach is seen slapping two female players during the 2022 Malaysia Youth U14 Volleyball Championship in Johor last month, drawing the ire of youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh.

The Malaysia Volleyball Association (Mava) said the volleyball coach who allegedly slapped two teenage female players has been suspended from involvement in all national volleyball activities until investigations are completed.

Mava also announced that they would establish an investigative body to look into the incident immediately and would contact related parties for that purpose.

“Mava will not tolerate any use of force on any party and is ready to take further action in accordance with Mava’s constitution,” the association said in a statement today. –  January 2, 2023.
