THERE has been no data leak involving its customers, Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) said today.

Malaysia’s largest bank said it had investigated claims of the data leak and found it to be false.

“Following the conclusion of our investigation into the allegation by a third party regarding a purported customer data leak, Maybank can confirm that these claims are false.

“The bank would like to reassure its customers that their data remains secure and private and that no customer data has been compromised,” it said in a statement.

Maybank also said it would continue to prioritise its cyber security and data protection measures.

Yesterday, Facebook user Pendakwah Teknologi, claimed that user information on nearly 13 million Malaysians from Maybank, Astro and Election Commission websites had been leaked.

The user said a website listed details of 3.5 million Astro subscribers and 1.8 million Maybank customers, as well as 7.2 million voters at 7.56pm on December 25.

The leaked information allegedly involved login IDs, full names, date of births and addresses.

Following this, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said he had instructed Cybersecurity Malaysia and the Department of Personal Data Protection to investigate the alleged leak.

“I will ask Cybersecurity Malaysia and the department to investigate whether there is a data leak involving the parties concerned and take action,” he said.

Maybank had said yesterday it was investigating if the allegations were true “since Maybank has not experienced a data breach”. – December 31, 2022.
