POLICE have arrested 36 students in connection with the death of a navy cadet officer from the Malaysian National Defence University (UPNM), The Star Online reported today.
Final-year student Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain was found with burn marks and bruises in an apartment in Sepang by his friends around 8pm yesterday.
Zulfarhan was reported to be still alive when his friends called an ambulance to rush him to hospital.
But Selangor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Fadzil Ahmad said the victim was pronounced dead at 10pm at Hospital Serdang.
Zulfarhan is believed to have been a victim of bullying. He had been bound, beaten and burnt with an iron.
Fadzil declined to confirm or deny the circumstances of Zulfarhan’s death, saying only that it was an ongoing murder investigation.
Earlier this morning, police arrested the students at the UPNM campus at the Sungai Besi army camp.
“A total of 36 students, all male, aged 20 to 21, have been arrested. Thirty-two of them are from UPNM while four more are from Uniten,” said Fadzil.
All of them have been remanded for a week until June 8.
Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein has said that the perpetrators would not be spared.
“Very sad this morning to hear the news of the death of navy officer cadet Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain.
“I have ordered the armed forces and UPNM to conduct an urgent investigation. No one will be spared legal action if found guilty,” he said on Twitter. – June 2, 2017.
