THE government will pass a law to address climate change promised in the Pakatan Harapan manifesto, Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said.

He said the law will be part of several initiatives to tackle climate change.

“The PH manifesto outlined a few key areas of commitment including the legislation of a climate change act which I intend to see through,” he told The Vibes.

Earlier in the week, he announced that a select committee on the environment and climate change will be set up.

Nik Nazmi said the panel is an early step to draft policies and identify mitigation efforts on climate change.

He said he recently met with Klima Action Malaysia (Kamy) and other civil society groups to discuss how to address climate change.

“I believe more engagements are needed with like-minded groups that will allow my ministry to present a clear picture of forward-looking policies which address environmental concerns in the local context,” he added.

In the meeting, Kamy and the other groups urged the ministry for three things during the first 100 days of the new government.

They were the formation of a select committee on climate change and biodiversity;  inclusive representation of local communities for effective decision and policymaking; and a climate change act. – December 25, 2022.
