PERFUME essence being dumped into the river has been identified as the cause of the water disruption affecting some 472 areas in Selangor and Putrajaya, said Subang Jaya assemblyman Michelle Ng.
“The pollution this time took place in Negri Sembilan. Perfume essence was dumped into the river. It is one of the most difficult smells to (get) rid of,” she said in a social media post.
“AC (activated carbon) bags have been deployed and the Semenyih Dam has been releasing water to dilute the smell,” she said in a Facebook post today.
Ng said that as at 10am, the ton (threshold odour number) recorded by the authorities was as follows: 1 ton at Sungai Limau Manis, 1 ton at 1.5 km away from Sungai Semenyih intake point and 4 ton at Sungai Semenyih intake point.
“The smell is gradually reducing closer to intake; it is therefore a matter of time before 0 ton is recorded,” said Ng in the post.
This morning, Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) said many parts of Selangor would experience a water supply disruption after pollution forced a shutdown of the Jenderam Hilir raw water pump station.
Air Selangor added that operations at the Sungai Semenyih and Bukit Tampoi water treatment plants were also halted after odours were detected.
Water supply was cut in major parts of Petaling, Hulu Langat, Sepang, Putrajaya, and Kuala Langat.
“Air Selangor will provide updates from time to time via various media,” said the water authority.
