A MALAYSIAN Anti-Corruption Commission senior officer and a staff member appeared at the Petaling Jaya shariah subordinate court today to face khalwat charges.

The charging of the two for khalwat, or close proximity between an unmarried couple, was deferred after lawyer Fadhlina Sidek applied for closed-door proceedings, saying the case involves classified materials related to national security.

Judge Syukran Yusof set May 3 for the decision on the application.

A bail of RM2,000 was set for each of them.

Prosecuting officer Fairus Jaafar said the duo will be charged under Section 29(a) and (b) of the Shariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995.

It was reported that the two were arrested by Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) officers after being found together “in close proximity” in a condominium unit in Taman Esquire, Seri Kembangan, on December 16 last year.

A Jais source was reported as saying the arrests took place during a 3am raid, which involved four officers from the department.

It was reported that the male suspect holds the post of director in an MACC department, while the woman is attached to the chief commissioner’s office. – March 8, 2018.

  • Is this khalwat charge politically motivated? Why did JAIS not act against the previous MACC chief who did the same in Bali?
