THE Anwar Ibrahim administration has been urged to fulfil Pakatan Harapan’s promise to reopen the investigation into the death of Teoh Beng Hock.

Teoh Lee Lan, the deceased’s elder sister, said the family wanted the new government to unravel the mystery behind the death of her brother.

“This has been our hope and demand since July 16, 2009, and it is a promise that Pakatan Harapan did not fulfil in 2018,” she told The Malaysian Insight.

“Justice has been delayed for almost 14 years and continues to be denied till today.

“No one has been held accountable for the death of my brother.”

Beng Hock was found dead on July 16, 2009 on the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, after questioning by officers of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office on the 14th floor of the same building.

He was political secretary to Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah, who was the exco for local government, new village development and regulation of illegal factories.

His family continue to press for the truth.

“The prime minister and the government have to fulfil their promise to uphold justice for the sake of the deceased,” said his sister Lee Lan.

The family’s lawyer, Sangeet Kaur Deo, also urged the new government to take up the case.

“Please take immediate action to reopen the case and complete the investigation into the cause of the deceased’s death,” she said briefly.

Beng Hock’s parents filed suit in May to demand that the police complete the investigation into the death of their son.

Teoh Leong Hwee, 74, and his wife, Teng Shuw Hoi, 69, filed for a judicial review, naming the inspector-general of police, the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director, the police and the government as the first to fourth respondents.

The applicants claimed the authorities had been negligent of their duties.

Although three special teams were established to investigate the cause of Beng Hock’s death, the probe was found to be incomplete because a letter from the CID director dated September 21, 2021 showed that the police had failed to continue working on the case after the investigation papers were returned to them from the attorney-general’s office.

In 2011, the Shah Alam coroner’s court decided that Beng Hock did not kill himself nor was he murdered and that no third party was involved in his death.

Later the same year, a royal commission of inquiry found his death to have been due to suicide.

In 2014, the Court of Appeal overturned the open verdict on the case and ruled that his death was the result of an unlawful act by one or several unknown persons. – December 16, 2022.
