PUTRAJAYA will be appointing a new attorney-general, The Star reported today.
The news comes after Attorney-General Idrus Harun said he would not be serving out his contract, which ends in March.
The report said that the appointment will be made soon, likely before the end of the year.
Three names have been presented to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his consideration, the report said.
All three are judges, the report said quoting a source.
The names were Ahmad Fairuz Zainol Abidin, Kamaludin Md Said, and Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh.
Kamaludin is a court of appeal judge in charge of judicial reviews.
Fairuz was deputy chief executive at Securities Commission (SC) before he was appointed to the High Court as a judicial commissioner. He was this year confirmed as a full High Court judge in the commercial division.
Wan Farid was in the news in June when he recused himself from hearing former prime minister Najib Razak’s application to to be represented by Queen’s Counsel Jonathan Laidlaw in the SRC International Sdn Bhd coruption case.
Wan Farid is formerly a politician and has relatives in Umno. He was a senator and deputy to then-home minister Syed Hamid Albar in 2008.
He left the senate to run as a Barisan Nasional candidate in the Kuala Terengganu by-election in 2009. He failed to win and resigned from Umno in 2013 to resume his legal career. – December 15, 2022.
