Klang Valley water supply to be restored starting 6pm tomorrow

WATER supply in the Klang Valley, which has been cut since yesterday due to urgent maintenance works at the SSP3 treatment plant, will be restored in stages starting 6pm tomorrow.

Selangor Infrastructure, Public Amenities, Agriculture Modernisation and Agro-based Industry Permanent Committee chairman Zaidy Abdul Talib said it will take between 36 and 72 hours for supply to be fully restored.

“Kuala Langat and Hulu Selangor can expect supply to be fully restored by 6am on Saturday, while for Petaling, Klang, Shah Alam, Gombak and Kuala Lumpur, 6pm on Sunday,” he told a press conference at the SSP3 plant in Bestari Jaya today.

He said in an incident yesterday, the failure of the Surge Vessel System to function properly caused damage to five 1,100mm-diameter pipes, with two of them bursting.

“Rectification works on the system are being expedited to restore supply as quickly as possible to the 563,622 accounts in the six affected areas.”

He said Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sg Selangor (Splash) carried out critical repairs on the SSP3 plant’s damaged Pump No. 3 valve after getting approval from the National Water Services Commission (Span).

He said the damage was detected only after Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Puas) found that there had been a reduction in the water level at the Bukit Tadun pump house on January 26.

“The depletion of the water level at the pump house is due to a reduction in the pumping rate of clean water from the SSP3 plant, operated by Splash,” said Zaidy.

He said Puas was forced to lodge a report with Span after efforts to get an explanation from Splash about the problem proved futile.

He said an investigation by Span on February 5 showed that not only Pump No. 3 was damaged, but also three others, namely Pumps No. 4, 5 and 8.

He said the other three pumps, however, had nothing to do with the pipe bursting yesterday, which left five people injured. – Bernama, March 7, 2018.
