THE investigation into the alleged misappropriation of funds by the previous Perikatan Nasional (PN) administration is focused on the RM92.5 billion in government funds spent on Covid-19 management measures, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said.
In a statement, MACC said the Finance Ministry has provided it with a breakdown of the funds under the 2020 and 2021 economic stimulus packages related to Covid-19 management.
“Initially, an estimated RM530 billion was allocated, and based on that amount, RM92.5 billion involved government funds, while RM437.5 billion was not government funds.
“The focus of MACC’s investigation is on the RM92.5 billion. The Finance Ministry is detailing the breakdown and will submit it to the MACC next week,” it said.
Earlier this week, MACC chief Azam Baki said the agency had opened an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of RM600 billion by the PN administration.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the Finance Ministry has acknowledged several breaches involving the funds.
The controversy began on November 15 when former Malacca chief minister Adly Zahari accused the then PN-led government of misappropriating RM600 billion from the Covid-19 emergency fund.
Former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin was reported as saying he is not afraid to be investigated over the allegations. – December 9, 2022.
