PRIME Minister Anwar Ibrahim has issued a letter of demand to Perikatan Nasional chairman Muhyiddin Yassin for an unconditional apology over an allegation that Anwar was paid RM15 million when he was Selangor economic adviser.
Messrs S.N. Nair & Partners, representing Anwar, submitted the notice of demand today.
According to lawyer Nair, his client is demanding that Muhyiddin immediately retract a TikTok video under the name @beritakini8 of his speech on Anwar during the Padang Serai general election campaign, which Anwar believes is defamatory.
Nair said his client also demanded a written undertaking by Muhyiddin not to repeat any allegations and comments in the video, in addition to seeking damages.
“If my client does not receive any satisfactory response within three days from the receipt of this notice, our instructions are to apply for an injunction order and proceed with legal action against Muhyiddin,” he said.
Based on the notice of demand, Muhyiddin on December 5 had allegedly expressed or caused to be published an excerpt from the speech, which has more than 1.1 million views, 6,061 comments, 21,400 likes and 2,169 shares.
Nair said the video was made with malicious intent, is untrue and a distortion of facts, made with moral and legal impropriety, in addition to seeking cheap publicity for political purposes in an attempt to win votes.
Nair further said that the video implied Anwar had abused his power as an MP, used dirty and unethical tactics, and betrayed the people’s mandate.
He also said that the entire video had been refuted by Juwairiya Zulkifli, political secretary to the Selangor menteri besar, in a media statement earlier today, adding that the statement was quoted in a Free Malaysia Today article: “Anwar received only RM1 as Selangor economic adviser”.
Nair, when contacted, confirmed to have delivered the demand to Muhyiddin by hand. – Bernama, December 7, 2022.
