THE first step in separating the public prosecutor’s office from the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) has been taken by Azalina Othman Said.

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) said the department’s legal affairs division had met with the AGC yesterday to discuss the split in roles.

She said following the meeting the AGC will put up a paper on the subject.

“This is the first step in separating the powers between the AGC and public prosecutor and I hope the cooperation will bear fruit as soon as possible,” she said in a Facebook post.

The Pengerang MP had over the last few years repeatedly called for the powers of the AG to be separated to avoid any more abuse of power in the country.

Last year the former deputy speaker during a talk organised by electoral watchdog Bersih said the separation was important so that the AG is not politically motivated or can be easily manipulated by those in power. –  December 7, 2022.
