TERENGGANU will increase its compliment of shariah enforcement officers next year, shariah implementation, education and higher education committee chairman Satipul Bahri Mamat said in the state assembly today.
According to Satipul, the measure was taken because there was a currently a shortage of officers to carry out essential duties.
“We have 85 enforcement officers, comprising 62 men and 23 women. It is indeed a small number and cannot accommodate the increase in the state’s population, which has reached 1.2 million people, and the addition of a new district, Kuala Nerus,” he said during the question-and-answer session in the Terengganu assembly sitting at Wisma Darul Iman, replying to a question from Hilmi Harun (Manir-PN).
Satipul also said that the state government would increase the number of enforcement volunteers to assist.
According to Satipul, a list of volunteers has been submitted to the Terengganu Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council for approval. – Bernama, November 29, 2022.
