PAKATAN Harapan will make way for a Barisan Nasional candidate in the election for the Tioman state seat, Amanah secretary-general Hatta Ramli said today.

He said this was in keeping with the spirit of the new unity government.

PH and BN have formed a coalition government at the federal level and in the states of Perak and Pahang.

“As such, Amanah, which is also part of the PH coalition, has decided to give way to the BN candidate in the Tioman by-election as a symbol of the cooperation within a unity government,” he said in a statement.

The PH candidate for the seat was Mohd Fadzli Mohd Ramly, who is a member of Amanah.

Hatta said Amanah viewed the Tioman election as a fight between the newly formed Pahang government and a group of racial and religious extremists.

“Amanah feels all the components in the state government must unite and fight the Perikatan Nasional,” he said.

The election for the Tioman seat was deferred following the death of PN candidate Md Yunus Ramli, who filed his nomination on November 5.

Polling will now take place on December 7.

PN is fielding Nor Idayu Hashim, the only woman candidate in the five-way contest.

BN incumbent Mohd Johari Hussain is defending the seat. Others in the fray are Osman A Bakar (Pejuang) and Sulaiman Bakar (Independent).

The electoral roll has 28,465 voters.

In 2018, Johari won by 1,280 votes, defeating Yunus, who secured 5,382. PKR candidate Sazili Mohd Nor won 3,029 votes, while Independent candidate Imam Zul lost his deposit after getting only 58 votes. – November 29, 2022.
