Let’s reform our higher education system

WE in Pergerakan Tenaga Akademik Malaysia (Gerak) extend our heartiest congratulations to Anwar Ibrahim on his appointment as Malaysia’s 10th prime minister.

As an organisation that fights for reform and integrity in higher education, we urge the new leadership and government to lead the struggle to bring about much-needed reforms and positive changes to the higher education system in this country.

There is much to be done, especially given the delays and distractions over the past three years.

In this regard, Gerak is ready to work hand in hand with the new leadership for the sake of our children’s education and future. – November 26, 2022.

  • How can this happen?
A student from our science schools with very good results went on our (Malaysian) scholarship to UK to do BA, MA and Phd. Did a few national and international projects. Was employed by one of our U's for a few years but later decided to migrate and join a foreign university. Now that Prof is back to advise and do projects in a few universities in Malaysia and Singapore. What is wrong with Malaysia? Our best brains are not respected by our universities. That university in Malaysia should be taken to task for losing such a Malaysian.

  • In one Malaysian U, the Faculty Kemanusiaan controls 3 subjects namely Islamic studies, Malaysian studies and English Language. There is a first class language lab. in the faculty, which is under used because too much of laughter, music, songs during some language lessons are NOT encouraged and acceptable to the head of department of the other two subjects. Even a listening and comprehension lesson involving the song Nobody's Child about a visually handicapped child was not allowed.
