PERIKATAN Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin has said his coalition will remain in opposition, so it can provide checks and balances to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s administration.
“With the federal government headed by Pakatan Harapan (PH), PN will play a role of offering checks and balances in parliament.
“Moving forward, PN will continue its struggles for the well-being of the people and the nation’s growth,” the Bersatu president said in a statement.
Muhyiddin also congratulated Anwar on his appointment.
His remarks came just hours after PAS – the major winner in the general election – said it would consider Anwar’s offer to join his unity government.
In a statement, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said his party will discuss it with the party’s PN allies in the near future.
“We will also survey the views of the public, who gave encouraging support to PAS and PN in the general election.”
Previously, PN chairman Muhyiddin rejected the king’s suggestion of forming a unity government with PH.
Muhyiddin also claimed he had the support of more than 112 MPs, enabling him to form a majority. He had urged Anwar to also prove his support.
Anwar, 75, was sworn in yesterday before Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, bringing an end to the stalemate that ensued after there was no clear winner following last Saturday’s election. – November 25, 2022.
