THE rising cost of living will be immediately addressed as top priority for the new government, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said today.

Although there were positive responses in terms of the strengthening of currency and also a rebounding of the markets following his appointment yesterday, he said the rising cost of living continued to be a burden to the people.

“Although the ringgit strengthened and with Bursa (Malaysia) performing well after the new administration, I still feel that the priority here is the cost of living.

“The (rising) prices of goods are still burdening the livelihood of the people,” the newly minted prime minister said at a press conference in Putrajaya today.

Anwar said that a thorough discussion will be held with the relevant agencies soon, possibly by Monday.

“If they don’t mind, I will ask them to hold a meeting this weekend or no later than Monday, although I understand it’s a public holiday.

“If they have some reservation, I can postpone. But I believe, knowing the commitment of these officers, they understand that our main task is to reduce the burden of the people,” the Pakatan Harapan chairman added.

Anwar was appointed Malaysia’s 10th prime minister yesterday following days of political impasse.

Yesterday, in his first press conference upon the appointment, Anwar stressed that in his administration, focus will be on the economy and also reducing the plight of Malaysians, regardless of race, religion or region. – November 25, 2022.
