AHMAD Zahid Hamidi today denied that he will step down as Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman and Umno president, as alleged in a media statement that went viral.

In a posting on Facebook, Zahid said the viral media statement was a hoax and was fabricated by an irresponsible party.

“Please don’t make the situation worse. Let’s just pray for the best right now,” he posted. He also uploaded the allegedly fake media statement.

The statement bearing the BN Malaysia letterhead dated November 22 claimed that an urgent meeting was held among the BN component party leaders yesterday to decide on several matters including the coalition they will support to form the new federal government.

The statement also said that Zahid wished to resign from his two posts following BN’s dismal performance in the 15th general election, and was leaving it to Ismail Sabri Yaakob to assume the duties until the party polls in January next year.

In the general election, BN only secured 30 seats, while Pakatan Harapan garnered the highest number at 82, followed by Perikatan Nasional (73), Gabungan Parti Sarawak (23), Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (6), Warisan (3), Parti Bangsa Malaysia and Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (1 each), and Independents (2). – Bernama, November 23, 2022.
